Item description for The Shack by William P. Young...

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.

Against his better judgment he arrives as the shack on a wintry afternoon and walk back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever.

In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant The Shack wrestles with the timeless question, Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain? The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book.

Reviews - What do customers think about Shack?

Read this Book!  Jan 6, 2009
While I read this book, I found myself praying, shouting, crying, laughing. It is an experience that raises questions and suggests answers. It is so personal. Read this Book!

Devastating to our "Gandalf-view" of God  Feb 22, 2008
This book had devastating effects on my view of the supernatural-in a good way!! I thought Young's portrayal of God to be amazing. All too often, we, even believers, view God-as Young put it-like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. That giant with the white flowing hair and beard. But, Young cast God in a new light. Not only is He the omnipotent being who is Powerful, but a Loving God who loves like a father and a mother, rolled into one-the perfect blend! It's definitely worth the read, and will help answer the question everyone struggles with: "Where is God in the midst of suffering?" It's unfortunate that this story was a work of fiction, but there has to be truth woven in and is God-inspired!

Thought prevoking  Feb 21, 2008
I read once through. I definatly will re-read to absorb. Certainly an interesting view of a christian relationship with God.

I read THE SHACK  Feb 20, 2008
THE SHACK was recommended to me. Religious types will have problems with it, I think. Why...God is a black woman, Jesus really is a carpenter, and the Holy Spirit is light, sound and frequency. Why did I like it? I think because it didn't limit God in the usual ways. He can come as He wants to in order to produce healing and deliverance in someone's life. He may actually leave a note in a mailbox. He may actually appear to a person on earth and He may be nothing like we have always perceived...I'm willing to let Him out of the box...it was a delightful journey through the book. Thanks,

shake things up  Feb 20, 2008
Eugene Peterson states(one of my very favorite writers): "This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's Piligrim's Progress did for this. It's that good." That's what I call an endorsement.

The Shack is a work of fiction that will makes you challenge some basic assumptions most have about God. It is well written and a page turner. I cared about its main character Mack and I felt for him. The main plot is how Mack deals with the horrible death of one of his daughters. It was hard for me to stomach the thought of losing my little girl so it was easy to empathize.

The book has already caused a bit of commotion. There are some bookstores that won't carry it. So if that doesn't make you want to read a book of Christian fiction what will? Really, it made me stop, reflect, and mentally cross reference a lot of typical evangelical stances that it challenges. And for the most part, I agree with where we are challenged. For instance, the person of God the Father is a healthy African American woman. Now is that your normal picture of God the Father. Of course, what does it mean to "picture" God anyway.

I look forward to more conversations this book should unearth. I believe discussion about the nature of God, His heart, and His plans is a really good thing. I'm glad that The Shack has allowed me to rethink and enter into some new conversations about God.

Wonderful book  Feb 19, 2008
Everyone should read this book. It is a sad story turned wonderful. If anyone ever doubted God's love, they should definetly read this book. Even if you are sure of God's love, this book will touch you and amaze you.
