Outline
In this inspirational costume drama, Michael Apted (49 Up) recounts a period in British history sure to be unfamiliar to most Americans. In fact, his eye-opening biography of 18th century abolitionist William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is likely to come as a revelation to many Britons, as well. After all, despite the presence of his wife, Barbara (Romola Garai), this isn't a particularly "sexy" story, but it is a powerful one. The title comes from John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace" ("I once was lost but now am found"). Newton (Albert Finney) was a former slaveholder, who became a clergyman and spent his days repenting. While America had John Brown, England had Wilberforce, and Newton is one of many who helped the MP to abolish slavery in the UK. The story begins towards the end of Wilberforce's mission when he's sick with colitis and addicted to laudanum. Apted continues to alternate between 1797 and 1789, when Wilberforce was fitter and more idealistic, and ends in 1807 as his efforts come to fruition. Apted and writer Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) do right by their hero. Unlike Amistad, however, slaves are largely off-screen, with the exception of author Equiano (Senegalese vocalist Youssou N'Dour). Amazing Grace reserves its focus for the politicians who risked their reps for the greater good, like Wilberforce and Prime Minister Pitt (an excellent Benedict Cumberbatch), and those more concerned with the income slavery provided their constituents, like Lord Tarleton (Ciarn Hinds) and the Duke of Clarence (Toby Jones). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Reviews - What do customers think about Amazing Grace?

amazing grace review  May 20, 2010
It's good to be reminded that individuals can truly make a difference when they are in relationship with a community of like-minded people. Amazing Grace highlights the wonder of discovering grace to change in tumultuous times and serves to remind us that love always prevails. Love is indeed a more powerful force than culture or tradition or money and in the character of Wilberforce we find a man who can settle for nothing less than true love even if it cost him his own life. Though he never dies physically in the movie he does die to himself and is born again to live for something much bigger than himself, something we all reap benefits from today.

Amazing History-How Sweet the Sound  May 10, 2010
It was nearly impossible to comprehend the human slave trade out of Africa by the English. It is not discussed and is simply not that well known. This film should be included in school curriculums in the US and Briton. It's subject is THAT important yesterday and today. Showing immense fortitude and perservance over a twenty year span Rev. John Newton (writer of the classic church hymn "Amazing Grace") and Wilber Wilberforce were pivotal men in the abolishing of slavery in the UK. Newton had dealt in slavetrade and spent his entire life repenting. Wilberforce had to overcome in Parliment the the monetary dividends that many in higher society reaped from dealing in slave trade. Remarkable times call for remarkable men.

Remarkable film!

A Wonderful Film - At Last...  May 4, 2010
Much of what has been coming out of the film and television industries can be described as, at the very least, garbage aimed at minds who delight in gratuitous violence and sex. "Amazing Grace" is not of that genre; rather, it is an informative, intelligent presentation of a past that should neither be forgotten nor repeated. It is a portrayal of one man's courage in the face of derision and opposition from peers of lesser moral values. See it, not just watch it. You'll be a better person for doing so.

Great subject, poor film  Apr 19, 2010
I would love to see a good movie on this subject.

Unfortunately, this one was badly written and badly acted.

Triumph of good over evil  Apr 5, 2010
This is a true account of the triumph of good over evil. How one man's crusade abolish one of the darkest episodes in human history, thus saving the lives of millions of men, women and children.
